PRUNING FOR GROWTH: LETTING GO OF WHAT NO LONGER SERVES YOU

If you ask anyone for tips on growing plants, they will likely mention choosing proper seeds and soil, balanced water and sunlight, compost, etc.

Hardly anyone will tell you that to grow your plant, you must cut off old leaves and branches, a practice known as deadheading or pruning.

Deadheading is also necessary for growth in all areas of life, just like in gardening.

Our culture emphasizes uniting so much that cutting off connections feels guilty.

However, it is very necessary for healthy growth on both personal and professional levels.

At least 40% of the contacts in your phonebook are likely no longer recognizable, and similarly, there are people in life who are not actually relevant right now.

Do not confuse a person’s value in general with their value in your life at a particular time.

Every person is valuable with their existential purpose, but not everyone in your contact list aligns with your life’s purpose. They might have had a fixed role to play, and once it’s done, they just remain a name on the acquaintance list or gossip for you and vice versa.

Recognizing such contacts and cutting them off with a positive, healthy mindset is a must-do task.

For example, you might have joined a newborn baby parenting community as new parents, but now your child is five, and you’ve learned all the lessons.

Exiting from this group does not make you a bad person because it no longer serves you.

Closing down such windows helps you focus on what’s important.

Another example is if you were once enthusiastic about a tech startup. You had ideas but eventually realized your limitations and market challenges and decided to stick to a job that ensures pay and peace.

You must log off from that startup group; otherwise, you might keep comparing your life with theirs, which may lead to dissatisfaction or regret despite being happy in life.
